About the Topic

The ability to scale at speed is critical to bring novel capture solutions to market sooner, and it will take many solutions to create access to carbon capture for a broad set of emitters. Piloting and sharing information to learn and improve quickly is key. Also, the power of policy is becoming real as the IRA/45Q become an inflection point to catalyze global support for lower carbon solutions. Clear, economically compelling, and well-legislated incentives allow companies to be confident in their investments to lower carbon emissions and move the market.

In 2021, Chevron launched Chevron New Energies (CNE) to accelerate lower carbon business opportunities in CCUS, hydrogen, and offsets and emerging energies, as well as support Chevron’s ongoing growth in biofuels.

Chevron New Energies states that with strong partnerships they aim to advance CCUS and associated technologies by scaling viable lower carbon solutions across the value chain to help the Company and industrial customers reach their lower carbon ambitions.

Chevron New Energies and Svante Partnership

At the end of last year, it was announced that Chevron was the lead investor in Svante’s Series E fundraising round, which raised $318 million, to be used to accelerate the manufacturing and commercial deployment of Svante’s novel solid sorbent-based carbon capture and removal technology. Chevron Technology Ventures made an initial investment in Svante in 2014.

Svante is the leading solid sorbent carbon capture and removal solutions provider that uses nanomaterials, including metal-organic framework, for post-combustion industrial carbon capture. The company's environmentally responsible, modular solutions are comprised of filters coated in solid sorbents, and rotary contactor machines. The filters adsorb diluted CO2 from post-combustion industrial flue gas and concentrate it into a high-purity, 95-percent pipeline-grade CO2 to prepare it for safe storage or further industrial use.

Svante’s technology is fit for heavy industries with hard-to-avoid CO2 emissions including hydrogen, pulp & paper, lime, cement, steel, oil & gas, petrochemicals, and more. The company's filter technology is also available for direct air capture.

Chevron New Energies and Carbon Clean Partnership

Chevron announced in February 2022 that it led the round and had made a new investment in Carbon Clean, a global leader in carbon capture solutions for hard-to-abate industries including cement, steel, refineries, and energy from waste cost-effective industrial carbon capture. Chevron Technology Ventures made an initial investment in Carbon Clean in 2020. In 2021, Chevron launched CNE to accelerate lower carbon business opportunities in CCUS, hydrogen, and offsets and emerging energies, as well as support Chevron’s ongoing growth in biofuels.

The company is an innovation leader in the CCUS market, with 81 active patent assets across 14 patent families covering 32 countries, and has developed a fully modular technology, CycloneCC, that is vital for scaling industrial carbon capture deployment to achieve global net zero targets.

As part of the new investment, Chevron and Carbon Clean are seeking to develop a carbon capture pilot for Carbon Clean’s CycloneCC technology on a gas turbine in San Joaquin Valley, California.
