About the Topic
In recent years and with DERs on the rise, the role of aggregators, especially those focusing on behind-the-meter ("BTM") assets, has been in the spotlight. FERC 2222 gave the space an even more relevant impulse by allowing this previously locked capacity into wholesale markets just as regular power plants would do. Applications expand beyond bidding into markets with a purely economic focus but expand over non-wires alternatives applications and capabilities such as peak capacity management, frequency regulation, voltage support, energy arbitrage and solar backflow mitigation depending on the aggregated asset class. In this Forum, we will focus on BTM battery storage key characteristics, main uses cases and highlight and compare innovators playing in this space.
About the Audience
This forum is targeted at all utility members working on DER management efforts, innovative customer offerings and grid planning / management engineers.
About the Innovator
Lunar was founded in 2020 with the mission to enable all-electric homes and smart asset management. The Gridshare platform, developed by Moixa and acquired by Lunar, aggregates thousands of smart homes together and dispatches them as a virtual power plant (VPP), helping utilities to keep the grid stable, unlock more renewable energy capacity, and reduce customer bills. Gridshare has been deployed across the UK, Japan, and the US, with >70,000 residential assets connected to the platform.
As key differentiators, in the near future, Lunar will be able to supply the US market with an in-house developed battery that will be easily integrated with the Gridshare management platform. After batteries, the company is planning to expand similar BTM management to other DERs. As highlighted by users, use cases and applications such as dynamic aggregation of assets can be done quickly and easily leveraging Moixa's experience in advanced markets like the UK and Japan.
