Power to the Drones: Power Line Stringing
Technical • October 20, 2022 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM GMT
Drones have been used in the power industry for a few years and are now enabling a new market in the US, bringing down costs and saving time on utilities and developers.
Power & Utilities
Renewables & Energy Storage
Summary Agenda

Power line stringing: Main Challenges

  • High winds and harsh working conditions
  • High risks for workers -  30 to 50 workers in every 100,000 are killed every year
  • High Capital Costs
  • Long lead times
  • Land acquisition and permitting
  • Accessing places with vegetation or near urban areas
  • Power line, railway and river crossings
  • Noise pollution, dust and downdraft from helicopters presenting risks to local communities
  • Environmental impacts of fossil fuel-based aircraft

Drones in the energy industry

O&G

  • Methane Detection
  • Wide Area Leak Detection

P&U

  • Asset Inspection
  • PV Module Inspection / PV Module Cleaning
  • Wind Farms O&M
  • Vegetation Management

Drone Power Line Stringing

Power line stringing is the perfect job for a drone, it can save a significant amount of time, there would be no need to expose workers to heights, it would reduce costs (no need of use costly helicopters) and the carbon footprint would be significantly reduced (due to fuel savings).

This is a relatively new field to be explored in the US but in many countries, specially in Southeast Asia this has been done over the past decade.

About the Audience

This Event will be of interest to energy project developers and engineers (e.g., vertically-integrated utilities, competitive energy service arms within deregulated utilities), utility system planners, grid operators (e.g. ISO/RTOs) transmission system operators (TSOs), and anyone involved with power line stringing, inspections and O&M.
