VEHICLE-TO-EVERYTHING (V2X) & VEHICLE-TO-GRID (V2G)
Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) is technology enabling bi-directional energy transfer to/from electric vehicles. The electric vehicle can be used as an energy storage device supporting a variety of application that can lower a customer's electricity bill, provide off-grid power, or provide grid management services such as load shifting or frequency support - just like any stationary storage asset. When connecting to the grid, this is referred to as Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G).
In addition to identifying the right value streams and use cases, V2X requires four technology challenges to be solved for successful deployment:
The debate on the value of Vehicle-2-Grid technology is as strong now as it has been over the last decade. On the plus side it is a technology with incredible potential for improving resilience and for getting to a net-zero energy system. But there are challenges about grid interconnection, controlling these flexible and mobile loads, and the value that it creates for customers and utilities over much simpler managed charging solutions.
We've explored V2G in several Forums in 2020 and 2021. We highlighted Fermata Energy in our 2020 Charging Infrastructure Forum to talk about their charger and the value of V2G for C&I customers. Nuvve presented in the 2020 Vehicle-Grid-Integration Forum with a focus on V2G for schoolbus fleets. And this year we hosted UK Power Networks and Octopus Energy to share learnings from their residential V2G pilot program in the UK.
As a follow-up to that UKPN/Octopus Energy session - and by the request of our members through several polls - this session will dive into the hardware that is needed for deploying V2G in a residential setting. This is where most of the value of V2G created, but also where most of the challenges exist. We will be highlighting the solution provided by dcbel as the first residential V2G charger to come to the market in North America.
