About the Topic
The transmission system has found itself at the center-stage of the energy transition. Both the evolving supply-side energy mix (e.g., solar and wind penetration) and demand-side disruption (e.g., building electrification, EV) have uncovered the need for a more flexible bulk power system. Evidence of this includes real power curtailment of renewable generation facilities and rising costs of transmission congestion.
While utilities and third-party merchant developers have been hard at work to propose new transmission lines, they both have to surmount what the industry has labeled the "three P's":
- Planning, the tools and processes by which transmission projects are conceptualized, designed, evaluated, and proposed to regulators
- Permitting, the patchwork of local, state, and federal permits required to construct transmission projects
- Paying, the mechanism(s) by which the cost of transmission projects are fairly allocated across those who host and benefit from them
A set of solutions known as grid-enhancing technologies (dynamic line ratings, power flow control, and network topology optimization) is poised to help utilities and grid operators enhance utilization of existing transmission facilities, by introducing advanced sensors, analytics, and power electronics into the transmission system.
You can explore the latest version of our Grid Enhancement Technologies framework, which provides a comprehensive examination of the various types of each technology.
This series is designed to offer a comprehensive application guide for Grid Enhancement Technologies (GETs), highlighting key deployments thus far, and presenting an overview of technology providers within this ecosystem. In this session, our focus will be on Dynamic Line Rating technologies, exploring various applications including:
- Contact sensor (on-wire) and analytics
- Non-contact sensors and analytics
- Fiber optic-based analytics
- Synchrophasor-based analytics
- Analytics only (sensorless)
About the Innovators
Ampacimon: Founded in 2010, Ampacimon is a pioneer in Dynamic Line Rating solutions. Their sensors, placed directly on conductors, measure line sag, wind speed, and tension for ice detection and aging. Ampacimon is a key player in grid monitoring solutions, serving customers in the US and Europe.
Enline: Enline offers a SaaS for electricity-related assets, providing historical, real-time, and forecasted insights into their performance. With a focus on overhead lines, the system tracks Dynamic and Ambient Adjusted Line Ratings along with over 80 other operational and risk variables for comprehensive asset management.
