Currently, distributed solar photovoltaic (PV), battery energy storage, and EV charging infrastructure projects in several states are encountering significant challenges in interconnecting with the distribution grid. This is primarily due to capacity constraints that can result in costly infrastructure upgrades needed to accommodate the interconnection request (link).

On a previous Grid DERMS Event we highlighted Energy Queensland's deployment of mPrest in Australia, this Event will continue to dive further into solutions that provide grid-informed DER management providing a critical link between control rooms and distribution networks.

About the Innovators

• Smarter Grid Solutions is one of the most demonstrated Grid DERMS providers supporting grid operators through a wide number of applications including autonomous DER monitoring, real-time control, aggregation, and optimization. The company has extensive experience in the flexible interconnections space both in the US and the UK.
• GridEdge Networks developed a turnkey decentralized system solution named DERCOM that enables DER flexible interconnections and supports a variety of grid services. Their solution increases the limited hosting capacity of existing lines and transformer substations by using dedicated software and hardware controls.

Both vendors have been piloting and scaling different ways of implementing flexible interconnections with Avangrid via their Flexible Interconnections Capacity Solutions (FICS) program.
