Summary Agenda

About the Topic

Mechanical Energy Storage is the oldest and the most common form of energy storage with incumbent Pumped Storage Hydro (PSH) technology. Still, over the past decade battery energy storage systems are replacing incumbent pumped-hydro technology due to their modularity, lower footprint and lower CapEx. Still, new mechanical energy storage forms are finding their path back to the energy storage market, with innovations on PSH systems, or with newer solutions that combine mechanical systems with thermal storage systems, using heat, water or air with compressors, turbines, and other machinery, sometimes even reusing abandoned infrastructure from the mining and oil and gas industry, providing in this way robust alternatives to electro-chemical battery storage.

This Event will explore how operators can leverage this technology, which innovators exist within the ecosystem, and discuss how these systems can lead to a net-negative carbon footprint.

About Renewell

Oil and gas companies are obligated to seal their wells at the end of their lifetime. There are over 2 million wells in the US that are not plugged or sealed, and that haven’t been producing in at least two years. These wells present an opportunity for operators to explore a new solution - extending their lifetime for the purpose of mechanical energy storage. Wells are an ideal location for potential energy; harnessing the power of gravity to store electricity. Renewell's mechanical energy storage system, captures potential energy by lowering a weight down the well, and producing clean energy by turning a winch. When the energy is required, the weight can be lifted back to its starting point.

About EarthEn

EarthEn is developing a flexible thermo-mechanical energy storage solution that uses CO2 in a closed loop to store 4-100+ hours of energy at a low cost & highly scalable manner. Their main differentiator against other CO2-storage solutions is that they maintain the supercritical state of CO2 through the entire storage process. Meaning they use novel supercritical CO2 turbines which enable higher efficiencies and they store the CO2 directly in tanks (instead of domes) in supercritical state reducing notably the solution's energy density and footprint.
