There's no shortage of lists to summarize the past year. But here at Darcy, we have a unique data set with activity on Darcy Connect from over 10,000 energy company Connect Users. That data shows which innovators saw the most activity on Darcy Connect in the form of views, clicks, likes, follows, meetings scheduled, etc. Combined with analysis from our Research Team about technology developments and market traction, we have selected the Top 10 Innovators from 2022 in each of our coverage channels. This is our way of saying: "these are the innovators that your peers are most interested in, so you should definitely go and learn more about them". In this article, you will find the Innovators that made it on the list in the Renewable Energies & Energy Storage category.

But there is far more detail to look at than what you'll find here.

The Innovator names are all linked to their Storefront, where you can find in-depth information on their products, business model, and our Research Team's opinion; Connect Users are even able to schedule meetings with the Innovators through the "take action" tab on their page.

  • In the month of January you will find weekly articles like this with Top 10 lists from our Oil & Gas, Power & Utilities, Sustainability, and Energy Transition research programs.
  • All articles will be followed by a Darcy Live Event.

Join us on our Best of 2022 for Renewables & Energy Storage event, scheduled for January 26 at 11 AM CST. At this Event we will summarize the technologies we've seen had had major traction through our Platform and in the market throughout 2022 (see below), discuss main trends for 2023 and share common challenges between utility-peers.

If you are unable to attend the forum, please still consider filling out this survey on what research priorities Darcy Partners should focus on in 2023.

The Top 10 Innovators from 2022 in the Renewable Energies & Energy Storage vertical are (in alphabetical order by category):

PV Solar

  • 5B: Designs and manufactures a fully prefabricated ground mount solar solution designed to be safer and faster to deploy for utility-scale, C&I, and off-grid PV solar power generation sectors.

Li-ion

  • FlexGen: Lithium-ion energy storage integrator to utility, power generation and industrial customers. The company designs and integrates energy storage solutions and the software platform.
  • Li-Cycle: Lithium-ion battery resource recovery company creating a secondary supply of li-ion battery materials. They are the largest lithium-ion battery recycler in North America.
  • Li-ion Tamer: Developer and manufacturer of products to improve the performance and safety of li-ion energy storage systems. They have developed gas sensors to detect li-ion battery failures before the thermal runaway develops.

Long-duration Energy Storage (LDES)

  • Eos: Develops zinc-bromine energy storage solutions. Their proprietary zinc-hybrid cathode is less toxic than li-ion, has a high cycle-life, can operate in wide temperature ranges and enables LDES applications.
  • ESS: One of the oldest companies in the long-duration and flow battery space. Uses abundant & non-toxic components, making it one of the “greenest” energy storage solutions as defined by the California University.
  • e-Zinc: Zinc reactor technology which stores electricity in zinc metal for large-scale energy storage. It combines electrochemical properties and mechanical storage to obtain a solution with almost no degradation, non-flammable and scalable.
  • Hydrostor: Offer their underwater advanced adiabatic compressed energy storage system (A-CAES) which addresses bulk electricity needs for dispatchable capacity, transmission deferral & ancillary services.
  • Invinity: Designs and manufactures modular and scalable Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries (VRFB) for C&I and utility-scale applications. A non-flammable technology with high lifecycle and for LDES applications. Invinity has already proven and commercialized its technology.
  • Malta: Developing a grid-scale thermal long-duration energy storage system using molten-salts and off-the-shelf components form the O&G industry.

Do let us know if you have any questions or comments about this list in the comment section below.

In addition to wrapping up 2022, January is also the month that we are setting our research priorities for 2023. We are member driven and focused on solving your challenges. So, I'm inviting you to share your topics of interest with us in this survey. You are welcome to fill out all of the sections that apply.

You are also welcome to share thoughts or reach out with any questions at juan@darcypartners.com.
