There's no shortage of lists to summarize the past year. But here at Darcy, we have a unique data set with activity on Darcy Connect from over 10,000 energy company Connect Users. Our data highlights which innovators gained most attention on Darcy Connect through views, clicks, likes, follows, meetings scheduled, funding, among others. Combined with analysis from our Research Team about technology developments and market traction, we have selected the Top 10 Innovators from 2024 in each of our coverage channels. This is our way of saying: "these are the innovators that your peers are most interested in, so you should definitely go and learn more about them".

In this article, you will find the Innovators that made it on the list in the category of Low Carbon Fuels.

But there is far more detail to look at than what you'll find here:

  • The Innovator names are all linked to their Storefront, where you can find in-depth information on their products, business models, our Research Team's opinion, and Connect Users are even able to schedule meetings with the Innovators.

  • Over the next weeks, you will find weekly articles like this with Top 10 lists from our Energy Transition Research Program as we work through the coverage areas of CCUS, Hydrogen, Low Carbon Fuels, and New Energies.

  • Hydrogen & CCUS articles will be followed by a Darcy Live Event.

  • Watch the State of Innovation: Hydrogen that took place on January 21, 2025.

  • State of Innovation: CCUS on February 4, 2025.

The Top 10 Innovators from 2024 in are Low Carbon Fuels (in random order):

BIOFUEL

  • Gevo: Gevo develops advanced biofuels, focusing on sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable chemicals through proprietary alcohol-to-jet technology. In 2024, it progressed its Net-Zero 1 project, secured a $1.6B DOE loan, and expanded global renewable fuel agreements.

E-FUEL

  • Twelve: Twelve uses proprietary electrochemical technology to convert CO2 into hydrocarbons, enabling production of sustainable fuels and chemicals. In 2024, it secured $645M in funding, advanced its AirPlant™ SAF facility, and signed a 260M-gallon SAF offtake deal with IAG.

  • HIF Global: HIF Global develops and scales carbon-neutral eFuels using renewable energy to combine hydrogen and captured CO₂. Notable 2024 achievements include installing a Direct Air Capture unit in Chile, launching a $6B Uruguay facility, and announcing a large-scale Brazil eMethanol project.

  • Synhelion: Synhelion develops solar-to-liquid technology, converting CO₂ and H₂O into carbon-neutral fuels using solar heat. In 2024, Synhelion completed DAWN, the first industrial solar fuel plant, and secured key agreements with Zurich Airport, SGV, and Pilatus Aircraft for future fuel supply.

WASTE TRANSFORMATION

  • Enerkem: Enerkem's patented gasification and catalytic conversion technology transforms non-recyclable waste into biofuels and circular chemicals. In 2024, Enerkem advanced projects in Quebec and Spain, targeting methanol and ethanol production from municipal waste and biomass, reinforcing sustainable waste-to-energy solutions.

  • Divert: Divert is a circular economy company on a mission to prevent food from being wasted through nationwide infrastructure and innovative technologies. Founded in 2007, the company provides an end-to-end solution that leverages data to prevent waste, facilitates edible food recovery to provide to people in need, and transforms unsold food products into renewable energy to power communities. Through this integrated approach to reducing wasted food–Prevent, Provide, Power™–Divert works with customers across the U.S. to reduce wasted food and positively impact people and the environment.

  • Verde Clean Fuel: Verde Clean Fuels develops syngas-to-gasoline (STG+®) technology to convert biomass, MSW, and RNG into finished renewable gasoline and methanol. In 2024, it secured $50M funding to expand into natural gas-to-gasoline facilities and advanced projects in Arizona and California.

AMMONIA

  • Copernic Catalysts: Copernic Catalysts develops advanced computationally designed catalysts for low-carbon chemical and e-fuel production, initially targeting ammonia synthesis. In 2024, it advanced high-efficiency, drop-in catalysts to reduce energy demands in ammonia production.

  • Ammobia: Ammobia specializes in clean ammonia production through its Haber Bosch 2.0 process, using hydrogen and air with advanced materials and catalysis that allow the process to run at a pressure 10 times lower than the traditional Haber Bosch. In 2024, they progressed in a scalable, low-cost solution to decarbonize traditional and emerging ammonia applications, including shipping and energy.

  • Nitrofix: NitroFix is developing a catalytical electrochemical process to produce ammonia from air and water under low temperature and pressure in a single step. In 2024, the company progressed its TRL 4 prototype, focusing on scaling for modular production by 2026.

Let us know if you have any questions or comments about this list in the comment section below. We're looking forward to another year of exciting and insightful research!
