To close out the school year, the Darcy Partners Power & Utilities team hosts its semi-annual “Cutting Edge Virtual Forum” on June 25. Unlike the standard Darcy Live forums that focus on technologies already being deployed by utilities, this forum looks at earlier-stage companies developing novel solutions to address key, sometimes seemingly intractable challenges in the power sector. 

The solutions presented in this forum are typically lower on the technology readiness level scale (TRL), or they are solutions that are ready technologically but have major barriers preventing them from being deployed broadly in North America. These are the sort of technologies that may feel like daydreams today, but you might see them all around your neighborhood (or floating high above us in the case of space-based data centers) in the next decade. 

This year, the Power & Utilities team came across a plethora of interesting, cutting edge technologies. We recognized that it would be difficult to have them all present in a single forum, but we wanted to share a little bit about them. Below you’ll find our list of “cutting edge innovators” for spring 2026. This is our way of saying: “these are a few of the companies we think are worth knowing a little bit about.” 

  • Axioma Robotics is a system integration and software development company. The company has developed an AI-enabled robotic system for live-line maintenance. The platform is compliant with the EU AI Act and supports semi-autonomous energized-line operations. 

  • Factorial Energy is a venture capital backed company developing solid state batteries with increased range and safety for electric vehicles (EVs). The company has multiple auto-OEM partnerships with the likes of Hyundai and Stellantis and announced a partnership with Korea’s leading battery equipment provider Philenergy earlier this year. 

  • Growvera develops plant-based sensor technology that provides real-time data on moisture and plant health, enabling better decision-making for agriculture, industrial processes, and wildfire risk management. 

  • Laki Power is developing the LKX-DRONE, a line-mounted autonomous drone charging station for high-voltage transmission lines that harvests power directly from energized conductors using its patented technology, enabling continuous drone operations for inspection, storm response, wildfire monitoring, and security patrols.  

  • Overview Energy is an Ashburn, Virginia aerospace startup building geosynchronous satellites to capture uninterrupted sunlight and beam it as near-infrared light into existing utility-scale solar farms. This turns PV plants into 24/7 dispatchable assets without new land, receivers, or grid interconnections. In November 2025, the company achieved its first demonstration of high-power wireless power transfer from a moving airplane to solar panels on the ground. 

  • Parallel Systems enables railroads to serve new markets by converting freight from trucking to rail. The company is building automated, battery-electric, freight rail vehicles and the tools to integrate this service into railroad operations. The technology aims to be “the Waymo of light rail.” Trains are already being tested in Georgia and California. 

  • Pila Energy develops plug-in, networked home batteries that provide automatic backup power, energy management, and optional solar integration for renters and homeowners. It offers affordable, simple, and useful batteries that make DIY home-energy accessible to all types of residences. 

  • Space Solar is a UK startup developing space-based solar power systems that harvest continuous sunlight in geostationary orbit and beam it as radio waves to a rectifying antenna on Earth. Having demonstrated successful testing of their wireless power beaming technology in 2024, Space Solar is emerging as a contender in the race to put space-based solar energy on the grid. 

  • Volta Home develops plug-in solar systems that let households generate clean power from balconies, patios, or backyards without traditional installation, permitting, or other rooftop solar requirements. 

  • Wildfire Innovations develops Rainstream, a mobile, large-area wildfire suppression systems that deploy rapidly to create protective water mist barriers, reducing heat, preventing ember spread, and safeguarding communities and critical infrastructure. 

  • XFRA is SPAN’s distributed AI data center solution that places modular, self-contained compute nodes at residential and small commercial sites, using SPAN’s smart power controls to tap underutilized grid capacity and deploy compute faster than traditional data center buildouts.

Companies such as Overview Energy and Space Solar are developing different approaches to wireless power transmission and space-based energy generation.

How could autonomous drones improve utility operations? Autonomous drones can help utilities perform inspections, storm response, security patrols, and wildfire monitoring more efficiently and safely. Technologies such as line-mounted charging stations may enable drones to remain in the field for extended periods, reducing operational costs while increasing visibility across transmission and distribution networks.

What technologies could help utilities address growing electricity demand? As power demand increases due to electrification, data centers, and other factors, utilities are exploring a range of emerging solutions. These include advanced energy storage, distributed computing infrastructure, clean power generation technologies, automated grid maintenance systems and innovative approaches to energy delivery and resilience that could complement traditional utility investments.
