Summary Agenda

About the Topic

Li-ion batteries from the first production wave are beginning to reach their end-of-lifetime, and can either be recycled or repurposed. In this Event, we will explore what solutions are already being offered in the space to deal with these hazardous materials. Note: We covered the topic of battery recycling in a previous Event, which you can access via this link.

The repurposing of batteries is an ideal path to reduce waste and keep carbon emissions low. We will be showcasing vendors working in this area and the business models they are adopting. We will also discuss what conditions are convenient for recycling and when to repurpose instead.

We will be focusing on vendors who are repurposing EV batteries for applications in utility-scale energy storage at lower costs and for 2 to 4 hour applications.

About the Audience

This Event will be of interest to energy project developers and engineers (e.g., vertically-integrated utilities, competitive energy service arms within deregulated utilities), utility system planners, microgrid planners, grid operators (e.g., ISO/RTOs) transmission system operators (TSOs), and anyone involved with energy storage and EV battery management. This Event will be specially well suited for those utilities who have EV fleets and also have to lead with Renewable Energies' intermittency.

About the Innovators

  • Moment Energy is working with four major automotive companies including Nissan, Mercedes and BMW to provide grid storage solutions. Their projects have ranged from reducing diesel dependence in off-grid areas in BC and Alberta, to supporting renewable technology development at the Canadian Hydrokinetic Turbine Test Center in Manitoba.

  • B2U Storage Solutions are the only vendor Darcy is aware of that has deployed a utility-scale BESS using 2nd life EV batteries; they are currently operating this 25MWh project and will be sharing their conclusions and results of their system.
