Enabling DSO Models: From Grid Analytics to Flexibility Coordination
Strategy • May 8, 2025 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM GMT
This event will explore how enhanced operational analytics can drive significant improvement to medium and low voltage visibility, as well as underpin new distribution-level markets.

Summary Agenda

About the Event

To enhance distribution grid operations, leading distribution utilities are pursuing pathways to distribution-level markets as a means to procure grid services from third-party DER (such as EV and BTM batteries).

Typically, two foundational activities along this journey are:

  • The systematic organization and "stacking" of DER that are available to provide grid support, somewhat analogous to the alignment of offers within a wholesale electricity market
  • The ongoing identification of granular (spatially and temporally) "grid needs," somewhat analogous to placing bids into a wholesale electricity market

For the former, Darcy have covered DER market platforms to highlight notable products and demonstrations:

  • NODESmarket, a Norwegian software developer with strong traction in Europe and early commercialization in North America. Learn more here: Darcy Live: TSO - DSO Coordination and DER Markets
  • Piclo, a UK-based software developer with strong traction in the UK, also with a growing footprint in North America. Learn more here: Opening DER Markets w/Piclo, National Grid & SPEN

For the latter, this session will spotlight a deployment of SMPNet's Omega Suite via Northern Powergrid's Community DSO project (backed by Ofgem, as part of its Network Innovation Competition (NIC) portfolio). Read more here: https://www.northernpowergrid.com/community-dso

About the Audience

This session will cover distribution grid operational analytics, with some functionalities overlapping those with platforms like ADMS and Grid DERMS. Anyone with a focus on enhancing distribution grid operations, like ADMS and Grid DERMS projects, are very likely to benefit from the session. Further, anyone with a data science, data analytics, business intelligence, or corporate strategy role will also likely benefit from how utilities are implementing advanced analytics beyond core IT/OT platforms.
