A scenario for carbon neutral New York City by 2050 that reduces transportation emissions by 80% from 2020 levels requires:
In that scenario, the total winter peak in NYC will be around 14.5 GW. Managed charging - shifting EV charging loads to off-peak times - can reduce that peak demand by 2 GW!
There is no reason to wait till 2050 to start deploying managed charging. The use cases - although smaller in total value - are already here, and the technology is ready; as highlighted in our Grid Integration Forum from 2020. But as with so many innovative technologies in the complex environment that utilities operate in, implementing these new technologies in successful customer programs under slowly developing regulatory environments is not easy. So in this Darcy Live Event, we will be learning from the experience of two companies already running these programs - so that we can all learn from their successes and challenges, both leveraging the managed charging software from ev.energy - which is one of the managed charging solutions on Darcy Connect as can be found in the Managed Charging Innovator Landscape.
The ChargeAhead program from Madison Gas & Electric has managed to shift 97% of EV loads to MGE's off-peak hours, while providing customers with PayPal rewards and bill savings through Time-of-Use rate optimization.
Sillicon Valley Clean Energy's GridShift program is not just optimizing for Time-of-Use charging, but also optimizes for lowest-carbon generation hours and provides bill credits for participants.
Representatives from MGE and SVCE will speak about their implementation process, challenges, and results from these programs so far; as well as about their experience working with EV.Energy.
